Summary:

The Coordinator for Continuous Improvement works in concert with NWESD staff, OSPI (Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction), and local districts to create a powerful, collaborative, and coherent regional delivery system providing professional development and support to schools and school districts in one or more areas: language acquisition, Multilingual Learners (MLL), leadership, and change management through the continuous improvement cycle.

Essential Functions:

  • As a member of the NWESD Continuous Improvement Team, works in partnership with the NWESD Lead, OSPI and the other 8 Educational Service Districts (ESDs) to support one another in the delivery of state-level and regional-level professional development to improve systems and instruction in schools identified for support.
  • Collaborates and works effectively as part of the larger NWESD Teaching and Learning team.
  • Assists schools or districts in identifying areas of highest need and developing focused plans for intensive professional development as part of their continuous improvement efforts.
  • Designs and provides professional development and coaching through an anti-racist lens, content-specific pedagogy, and universally designed evidenced-based instruction, that supports language acquisition and access to content for multilingual learners.
  • Supports coaches, teacher leaders, principals, and teachers through shared learning, investigating standards, observing instruction, and prompting reflection to promote student learning.
  • Provides support in the use and analysis of screeners, diagnostic, and formative assessments and other student data, with emphasis on improving instruction and systems through various models, including Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS), WIDA Assessment System resources and formative assessments.
  • Works collaboratively with school and districts to support implementation of the evidence-based, culturally sustaining practices for diverse and exceptional learners
  • Collaborates with district/school teams as they increase their skills in data analysis, lesson design, and the collection and examination of evidence of learning.
  • Collaborates with district, school, and regional teams to support tiered, culturally sustainable instruction informed by effective measures of progress.
  • Guides and facilitates the development and on-going growth of collaborative grade level, subject area and school and district-wide teams (professional learning communities) within the region.
  • Stays current with Washington’s educational reform efforts and research in leadership, teaching, and learning.

Required knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Knowledge and understanding of State Standards, MLL standards and framework and of research-based instructional strategies and assessment practices that support effective instruction.
  • Demonstrated experience teaching curriculum and/or assessment workshops in language acquisition and access to content for multilingual learners; ability to manage professional learning.
  • Successful leadership skills in continuous improvement and/or effective educational practices.
  • Knowledge of educational technology and remote learning opportunities
  • Knowledge of professional development/training practices appropriate to adult learners.
  • Ability to work closely with a team at school, district, ESD, or state level to accomplish program objectives.
  • Knowledge of standards and research-based instructional strategies and assessment methods necessary to increase student performance on those standards, or knowledge of Washington State’s English Language Proficiency Standards and research-based instructional strategies and assessment methods necessary to increase MLL performance on those standards.
  • Ability to lead educational reform activities at school, district, ESD, or state level.
  • Knowledge of WA State Educational Reform mandates as it relates to student learning including technology integration, cross-curricular alignment techniques, and classroom curricular integration.
  • Knowledge and application of Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) model.
  • Ability to practice data-driven decision-making and inquiry cycles.
  • Knowledge of basic budgeting processes and ability to manage and monitor assigned program budgets.
  • Knowledge of effective leadership, supervisory techniques, and the continuous improvement model.
  • Knowledge of computer hardware and software programs and applications specific to the educational environment as well as skill in word processing, spreadsheets, and audio-visual equipment.
  • Ability to take part in conference planning and execution at a management level and develop and define effective workshops.
  • Ability to remain flexible to meet OSPI and legislative mandates regarding student information services and projects.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree; Master’s Degree preferred.  Significant successful experience in school leadership and teaching multilingual learners. Multilingual candidates preferred. WSP/FBI criminal history background clearance required. Valid Washington State driver’s license and proof of liability insurance required.

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:

Work is performed primarily in an office environment; however, travel is required to local school districts and for workshops, committee representation and conferences. Personal vehicle is required for transportation to various sites. Sitting for extended periods of time may be required. Lifts and carries a maximum of 40 pounds. Adequate manual and finger dexterity, hearing, speech, and vision are necessary to perform the essential functions of this position.

Hazards: Those present in a normal office environment. Routine travel may pose potential hazards including driving in inclement weather.
