SUMMARY:

The Math Coordinator works in concert with NWESD staff, OSPI, and local districts to create a powerful, collaborative and coherent regional delivery system providing professional development and support to schools and school districts for mathematical instruction to improve student proficiency in mathematics, as measured by the Washington State designated assessment (i.e., Smarter Balanced Assessments).

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Provides professional development in content knowledge, content-specific pedagogy, differentiated instruction, formative assessment, and Common Core State Standards for mathematics and curriculum both regionally and within the context of a school or district.
  • Works in partnership with OSPI and the other 8 ESDs to support one another in the delivery of state-level and regional-level math professional development.
  • Works with participating teachers, coaches, teacher leaders and principals observing instruction and facilitating reflection to promote student learning of worthwhile mathematics.
  • Provides support in the use and analysis of diagnostic and formative assessments and other data on student math achievement to improve instruction.
  • Guides and facilitates the development and on-going growth of collaborative grade level or subject area teams (professional learning communities) within the context of a school.
  • Collaborates with district/school teams as they increase their skills in data analysis, lesson design, and the collection and examination of evidence of learning.
  • Provides support to mentors and/or instructional coaches in the area of math.
  • Assists schools or districts in identifying areas of highest need and developing focused plans for intensive professional development in the area of math.
  • Provides support in mathematics curriculum alignment and development or identification of supplemental materials.
  • Collaborates and works effectively as part of the larger ESD 189 Teaching and Learning team.
  • Stays up-to-date with Washington’s educational reform efforts and current research in the area of teaching and learning of mathematics.
  • Performs related duties as required to the specific department. At the time of the interview additional job functions will be provided

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree; Master’s Degree preferred.
  • Significant successful experience teaching K-12 mathematics required.
  • Demonstrated understanding of Common Core State Standards in mathematics and of research-based instructional strategies and assessment practices that support effective instruction.
  • Demonstrated experience teaching curriculum and/or assessment workshops in mathematics; experience managing workshops and special events.
  • Demonstrated successful leadership skills in school reform and/or effective educational practices.
  • High commitment to accomplishment and flexibility in work hours.
  • Personal transportation and willingness to travel.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of educational technology.

Requires knowledge of:

  • Professional development/training practices appropriate to an adult audience.
  • Teamwork at school, district, Educational Service District or state level
  • Common Core State Standards in mathematics and the researched-based instructional strategies and assessment methods necessary to increase student performance of all students on those standards.
  • Leading an educational reform activity at school, district, Educational Service District or state level.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Work is performed in an office environment, however, travel may be required for workshops or conference attendance.  Lifts and carries a maximum of 30 pounds.  Adequate manual and finger dexterity, hearing, speech and vision are necessary to perform the essential functions of the position.

Hazards: Those present in a normal office environment.  Lifting and moving tables and chairs for workshop setup is a potential hazard if proper safety procedures are not adhered to.
