Summary:
In accordance with RCW 28A.310.510, and under the general direction of the School Safety and Wellness Program Manager, the Comprehensive School Safety Coordinator is responsible for providing leadership in comprehensive school safety planning, otherwise referred to as Emergency Operations Planning (EOP). The Comprehensive School Safety Coordinator is an integral part of the School Safety Center, which includes the Student Threat Management Program and Behavioral Health Navigation Services.
Essential Functions:
Duties listed are intended to summarize the primary responsibilities of this position. Employees may not perform all listed duties and may be assigned additional responsibilities within the general scope of the position.
- Provide training, consultation, and technical assistance to school districts and school teams regarding equitable school safety planning, emergency preparedness, crisis response, environmental risk management, and comprehensive school safety practices.
- Support school districts in implementing and maintaining comprehensive school safety standards aligned with prevention, mitigation, protection, response, and recovery related to natural, human-caused, and technological threats.
- Support the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of district and school Emergency Operations Plans (EOPs), reunification plans, and related safety procedures.
- Provide trauma-informed training, consultation, and real-time support to school districts during crises and emergencies, including guidance on best practices, response protocols, and recovery efforts.
- Plan, coordinate, and deliver professional learning opportunities on school safety, security, emergency management, and related topics, including harassment, intimidation, and bullying (HIB), Incident Command Systems (ICS), natural disaster preparedness, and support for school resource officers.
- Assist districts and schools in implementing equitable, effective, legally compliant, and fiscally responsible safety practices and programs.
- Attend and facilitate meetings with school districts, Educational Service Districts, community partners, statewide peer networks, and agencies including Washington Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction to support collaboration, resource sharing, and regional school safety initiatives.
- Collect, analyze, maintain, and share required school safety data, reports, plans, procedures, training materials, and related resources.
- Respond to inquiries from school districts regarding school safety measures, policies, procedures, compliance requirements, and implementation practices.
- Participate in required statewide Regional School Safety Center meetings, trainings, professional development activities, and ongoing learning related to emerging school safety research, best practices, and legal requirements.
- Represent the program through presentations, meetings, conferences, and collaboration with local, regional, state, and federal partners.
- Provide additional services and supports consistent with state and federal school safety requirements and program goals.
Required knowledge, skills, and abilities:
- Knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, policies, agencies, and community resources relevant to school safety.

- Ability to analyze complex situations, identify key issues, and develop meaningful recommendations and conclusions.
- Knowledge of grant processes and compliance requirements.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree in related field and 5 years of experience working in education. Master’s degree in school administration, law enforcement, or emergency management preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted which provides the skills, knowledge, and abilities to perform the essential functions of this position. Experience working with school-based emergency operations plans and incident command systems preferred. WSP/FBI criminal history background clearance required.
Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:
Work is performed primarily in an office environment; however, travel may be required for school district and other agency visits, training sessions, workshops, and other committee representation. Lifts and carries a maximum of 40 pounds. Sitting for extended periods of time may be required. Adequate manual and finger dexterity, hearing, speech, and vision are necessary to perform the essential functions of this position.
Hazards: Potential hazards are present because the position requires the incumbent to travel. Hazards may include but are not limited to traveling alone, traveling in inclement weather conditions, varied road conditions, rush hour traffic, etc.
