Cooperative Student Programs

Our Goal

Keeping students in school and engaged in the learning process can be challenging. The NWESD works closely with school districts to provide support for programs designed to keep students who find themselves involved with the criminal justice system and/or with BECCA issues engaged in school. Our Open Doors, Detention & NRLC programs promote opportunities designed to ensure students get a diploma, a GED, or a vocational certificate while encouraging them to actively participate in career planning. Our Discovery program serves elementary, middle, and high school students experiencing significant social, emotional, and behavioral difficulties. The goal is to have students develop sufficient internal discipline so that little external reinforcement is required.

The NWESD also works closely with the Juvenile Detention Centers in Skagit, Whatcom and Snohomish Counties through the Detention Center Educational Programs to provide a structured learning environment with certificated special education teachers and paraprofessionals guiding students through a standard school curriculum. Students receive instruction in Reading, Language Arts, and Mathematics as appropriate for their skill level. They may also have the opportunity to participate in Social Studies, Science, Art and Physical Education.
