A Look Back at the 2019 Summer Literacy & Science Enrichment Project

The Curt & Jake Maberry migrant camps are the largest farmworker housing facilities in Western Washington, yet both reside in Whatcom County school districts that have not offered K-5 MEP summer school programs for many years.  As part of our team’s continuous efforts to increase equitable access to learning and to best serve migrant students in our region, the NWESD MEP team piloted an innovative, on-site migrant camp summer school model in July of 2019.

Highly interactive, hands-on, migrant-inclusive literacy development and science curricula were created by NWESD’s Regional ELA Coordinator and the University of Washington’s National Earth & Space Sciences Pipeline respectively.  At each Curt and Jake Maberry migrant camp, programming took place three hours per day, five days per week, for three weeks. The first two weeks were focused on literacy enrichment, and the third was dedicated to science. A total of 37 students were served between the two sites, 23 at Curt Maberry’s camp and 14 at Jake Maberry’s camp.  Instruction was led by one certificated bilingual elementary teacher and assisted by five bilingual paraeducators.
