Over the past several years, the Special Programs and Services Department at the Northwest Educational Service District 189 (NWESD) has been collecting data from our region. The results indicated a high demand for school psychologist services and/or behavior specialist services in our region. As a result, the NWESD Specialist Consortium was recently launched to meet this need.

The Specialist Consortium contracts with school districts to provide either a certificated behavior specialist or a school psychologist on an as-needed basis to support students with special needs in the absence of full-time staff or for temporary leave replacement. Our specialists can provide coaching and technical support for district staff and assist with preparing Individual Education Plan (IEPs), Functional Behavior Assessment (FBAs), and Behavior Intervention Plan (BIPs). These services are in addition to continued supports provided by the Director and Assistant Director for Special Programs and Services from the NWESD.

Special Programs and Services Director Fran McCarthy said, “Our goal is to provide in-person, quality staff to our districts who will meet the needs of their students and to assist those districts that need these positions part-time and are unable to fill them. We are excited to bring this new service to our region.”
