5521 – Tuition Reimbursement
The Northwest Educational Service District 189 (NWESD 189) Board of Directors is committed to the continued education and professional growth of every staff member. In support of such education and professional growth that furthers the mission of the NWESD 189, the Board endorses utilizing available NWESD 189 resources to fund a tuition reimbursement program for eligible employees seeking a recognized certification, endorsement, or degree in an education/NWESD 189 agency-related field from an accredited college or university. To qualify for NWESD 189 tuition reimbursement, such continuing education and professional development must support the mission, vision, values, and goals of the NWESD 189 and be aligned to an employee’s approved professional development plan.
The maximum tuition reimbursement an employee may receive in any single fiscal year is the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) annual limit for non-taxable tuition reimbursement at the time the employee applies for NWESD 189 tuition reimbursement. Employees receiving tuition reimbursement from other sources are eligible to apply under this policy for the difference between tuition reimbursement from those other sources and the annual IRS limit for non-taxable tuition reimbursement.
Training classes and workshops directly related to an employee’s position may be paid for by NWESD 189 departments or programs given budget and funding considerations and advance approval by the employee’s supervisor per NWESD 189 Policy 5520 – Staff Development. Such training classes and workshops are not eligible for tuition reimbursement under this policy.
The Board of Directors directs the Superintendent to develop procedures to implement a tuition reimbursement program for NWESD 189 employees.
