2029-P – Animals as Part of the Instructional Program

Prior to granting or denying requests to include animals in the program’s instructional program, the program administrator will evaluate the following issues:

  1. There is an educational benefit to be gained by the inclusion of the animal in the instructional program.
  2. There is an appropriate plan for the control of the animal, especially for undomesticated or potentially hazardous animals.
    1. No animal will be allowed to roam unrestrained on the program campus or in classrooms.
    2. All animals will be restricted to the area designated by the program administrator.
    3. Animals will be housed in suitable, sanitary self-contained enclosures appropriate to the size of the animal or kept on a leash.
    4. Birds will not be allowed to fly free in a classroom.
  3. Any health concerns involving students, staff or other animals have been thoroughly addressed.
    1. Animals will be clean and healthy so that the risk of transmitting diseases to students is minimal.
    2. Dogs and cats must have a health certificate signed by a licensed veterinarian showing proof of current vaccinations.
    3. Animals should be well-groomed and free of parasites such as fleas, ticks, and mites.
    4. Snakes, reptiles, and amphibians should not be handled without very close adult supervision.
    5. Staff will ensure students wash hands thoroughly after handling any animals.
  4. The animal’s health, safety and well-being have been appropriately evaluated.
