2029-P – Animals as Part of the Instructional Program
Prior to granting or denying requests to include animals in the program’s instructional program, the program administrator will evaluate the following issues:
- There is an educational benefit to be gained by the inclusion of the animal in the instructional program.
- There is an appropriate plan for the control of the animal, especially for undomesticated or potentially hazardous animals.
- No animal will be allowed to roam unrestrained on the program campus or in classrooms.
- All animals will be restricted to the area designated by the program administrator.
- Animals will be housed in suitable, sanitary self-contained enclosures appropriate to the size of the animal or kept on a leash.
- Birds will not be allowed to fly free in a classroom.
 
- Any health concerns involving students, staff or other animals have been thoroughly addressed.
- Animals will be clean and healthy so that the risk of transmitting diseases to students is minimal.
- Dogs and cats must have a health certificate signed by a licensed veterinarian showing proof of current vaccinations.
- Animals should be well-groomed and free of parasites such as fleas, ticks, and mites.
- Snakes, reptiles, and amphibians should not be handled without very close adult supervision.
- Staff will ensure students wash hands thoroughly after handling any animals.
 
- The animal’s health, safety and well-being have been appropriately evaluated.
