Motivating students in problem solving is often easier through the use of technology, which allows students to actively and responsively revise their solutions girl on computerand thinking. Students learn most effectively when they are able to apply what they know to solve a real world problem. Science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) areas are deeply intertwined in the real world and provide a career path for many of our students.

Knowing this information as well as the new teacher certification renewal options, I asked the NWESD content coordinators how they are supporting STEM education. I learned that they want to support teachers as they familiarize themselves with the problem solving practices that are an essential part of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and the Common Core State Standards for Math(CCSS-M). They shared with me that they are super excited to work together to offer a two-day STEM class, Exploring STEM through Sphero.

This course is being held on August 3rd and 4th and involves technology, engineering, and mathematics. Itwill introduce teachers to Sphero, a robot that engages students in engineering design and reinforces logical reasoning, as well as geometric and proportional sense-making. Participants will engage in coding, use computational thinking in problem solving, and have access to additional lessons to usefor continue learning.
