School Nurse Corps Program

Recognition

Recipient of the 2013 Washington State Warren Featherstone Reid Award for Excellence in Health Care

Funded by the Legislature since 1999, the School Nurse Corps (SNC) Program funds direct nursing services in rural areas throughout Washington State to help ensure that all students have access to professional Registered Nursing services at school. In the 2016-17 school year, the SNC directly served the health, safety, and learning needs of 77,251 students in 139 under-served and rural school districts.

The program also funds one School Nurse Corps Administrator (SNCA) in each of the state’s nine Educational Service Districts. In addition to allocating funding for direct nursing services between districts, the SNCAs also provide important and uniform statewide quality assurance in school nursing services through professional development, consultation, technical assistance, mentoring and training to all school nurses within their regions. The combined services provided through the SNC Program reduce the impact of health conditions on student absenteeism, helping to create a pathway for student attendance, academic performance and graduation.

School Nurse Corps Vision

All children receive equitable, full access to school nursing services to be safe and successful in school and life.

School Nurse Corps Mission

The School Nurse Corps, in partnership with schools, families and communities, improves student health outcomes, safety, and readiness to learn. The School Nurse Corps promotes equity by increasing access to student health services, and expanding public school districts’ capacity to provide a safe and healthy learning environment.
