School Safety & Security Training | April 28-29 2022 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM

House Bill 1214 requires all school safety and security staff to complete training on 13 mandated topics. The NWESD has developed a training program that meets the requirements of this law. If your school or district employs people whose primary duty is to provide safety or security services, then they must complete this training.

The state deadline for this training was March 2022, but you have a chance to satisfy this requirement by attending a 2-day training.

This training will cover all 13 topics required by the legislation:

  1. Constitutional & Civil Rights of Children in School
  2. Child Adolescent Development (Adolescent Brain Development)
  3. Trauma Informed Approaches
  4. Recognition and Responding to Youth Mental Health Issues
  5. Educational Rights of Students With Disabilities; Disability and Behavior; Best Practices for Interacting With Students With Disabilities
  6. Collateral Consequences of Arrest, Referral for Prosecution & Court Involvement
  7. Community Resources: Alternatives to Arrest & Prosecution; Pathways to Access Services w/o court or Criminal Justice Involvement
  8. Disparities in the Use of Force and Arrests of Children
  9. De-Escalation Techniques
  10. Restraint and Isolation in Schools
  11. Bias Free Policing; Cultural Competency; Diversity Training
  12. FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act)
  13. Restorative Justice Principles and Practices

Audience

K-12 schools and district school safety, school resource officers, and security staff.


Presenter:

Steven Dodson has over 10 years of experience working in protective services working as a Campus Security Officer, Reserve Deputy, Hospital Security Officer, and Emergency Manager. Steven is credentialed through the International Association of Emergency Managers and the International Association for Healthcare Safety and Security. As the Comprehensive School Safety Coordinator Steven provides NWESD districts with the support and resources they need to foster a safe learning environment training and consultation in safety planning, prepare procedures for responding to natural disasters and other emergencies, and can assist districts in their response during and after emergencies.
