[ANACORTES, WA,June 2018]–Wendy Stegall, a teacher with the Snohomish School District is one of the three candidates, selected from the Northwest Educational Service District 189 (NWESD) region, for the competitive Expanding Capacity for Special Education Leadership (ECSEL) program. Stegall has been with the Snohomish School District for nine years and is currently a Teacher on Special Assignment (TOSA), a position she has held for one year.
ECSEL is a prestigious program offered through the University of Washington-Bothell and OSPI. The ECSEL (Expanding Capacity for Special Education Leadership) is a post-graduate program for aspiring special education administrators, focusing on the knowledge and skills needed for local education administration. As a grant-funded program supported by OSPI, only 18 students were selected from a large applicant pool for each cohort.
Stegall found the ECSEL application process to be a very thorough and thoughtful evaluation of her beliefs in education, and a motivating factor was her drive to pursue a position in administration.
Stegall’s goal for the ECSEL program is to hone her skills to become a director, with a focus on expanding her knowledge of law. Joining the ECSEL program became a logical next step when she found out that the instructors are current Special Education directors working in education and in Wendy’s words, “Learning from the people working in the field, is the best!”
Mentoring new teachers is also one of her passions and Stegall has been able to assist the Snohomish School District in retaining some great educators that continue to grow in their practice. She looks forward to continuing her work under the Beginning Educator Support Team (BEST) Grant Program and participating in the Snohomish School District Leadership Cohort, which is a partnership with University of Washington (UW) Bothell. Through this program, she was able to encourage four colleagues to submit applications for Cohort II. The program has assisted the Snohomish School District in building leaders in all the schools and Wendy was very proud to be a part of it.
The NWESD is pleased to announce three outstanding candidates from the NWESD region who were selected for a prestigious program offered through the University of Washington-Bothell. Jennifer Menzies (Lake Stevens), Tonia Johnston (Oak Harbor), and Wendy Stegall (Snohomish) were recently notified of their selection and will engage in an intense, cohort-based program consisting of two year-long seminars, a 400-hour internship requirement, and a set of performance tasks allowing candidates to demonstrate required proficiency. This blended online and face-to-face model combines summer and weekend meetings supplemented by e-learning resources, seminars, internship, and performance tasks.
