ScienceScience services at NWESD support science education reform for students, teachers, schools and districts. We are here to serve you in any of the following areas:Professional Development NWESD provides research based, inquiry centered learning for educators, modeling effective instructional strategies which change teacher practice and improve student learning in science. Technical Assistance The science team at NWESD can provide technical assistance and support for science education to districts across the region Science Materials Center Cooperative The NWESD Science Materials Center specializes in refurbishing science kits/modules when needed. The center is a cost effective means for implementing inquiry-based science as large amounts of materials are purchased, managed, and distributed. Further, the burden of purchasing and managing materials is removed from the classroom teacher. Leadership and Assistance For Science Education Reform (NW LASER Alliance) LASER assists our member school districts with implementing their ongoing, inquiry-based science program that is based on a research-based model of systemic reform and aligned with the Washington State Science Grade Level Expectations. Supporting Materials Adoptions The NWESD Science Staff can effectively lead an adoption team through a process which allows them to thoughtfully and thoroughly investigate materials being considered. Focus is placed on the work that students do, science content, assessment, and the work teachers do. Rubrics and documentation created during the process can be used to communicate with staff, parents, community and school boards. Effective Science Instruction NWESD can provide or coordinate high quality professional development opportunities that will deepen teachers’ abilities to implement effective science teaching practices in their classrooms. This may include, but is not limited to: inquiry methods, science notebooks, formative assessment, Curriculum Topic Study, and strategies for classroom discourse. Building Bridges Between Math and Science (BBBMS) BBBMS is the Math/Science Partnership grant that NWESD received in 2007 in a partnership with seven school districts, Western Washington University and Whatcom Community College. Our vision of success is the intentional inclusion of math instruction in middle school science classrooms and science instruction in middle school math classrooms. Content Science content trainings provide adult level, hands-on experiences which expand and deepen participants’ knowledge and understanding of the scientific principles underpinning the activities in the science curriculum materials.
