Whatcom Discovery

The Whatcom Discovery program serves elementary, middle, and high school students experiencing significant social, emotional, and behavioral difficulties.  The goal is to have students develop sufficient internal discipline so that little external reinforcement is required.  In addition to the behavior management system, social and emotional goals are taught daily. Specific instruction enables students to learn problem solving, decision-making, and social skills.  Also, there is a strong emphasis upon academic instruction that is individually determined.

Class sizes average eight or fewer students, and are typically staffed with one teacher and two instructional assistants.  Additional support services are provided by a full time counselor or social worker, who provides staff consultation, direct services to students, and linkages to community agencies.

Whatcom Discovery houses Interim Alternative Educational Setting (IAES) program for member districts.
